Summary

The remarkable, little-known story of Belle da Costa Greene, J。 P。 Morgan's personal librarian--who became one of the most powerful women in New York despite the dangerous secret she kept in order to make her dreams come true, from New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict and acclaimed author Victoria Christopher Murray。

In her twenties, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J。 P。 Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library。 Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection。

But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs。 She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener。 She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality。 Belle's complexion isn't dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white--her complexion is dark because she is African American。

The Personal Librarian
tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths to which she must go--for the protection of her family and her legacy--to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives。

This was a truly wonderful read。 Highly recommend!

This novel is based on the story of industrialist J。P。 Morgan's Personal Librarian, Belle da Costa Greene。 A little known fact is that Belle is coloured and passing herself off as White at a time when this would be considered audacious at best and worthy of severe punishment。 Belle is successful beyond her wildest dreams and the book has a little of everything。 It kept me on the edge of my seat as I didn't want Belle to be "discovered。" A very interesting book。 This novel is based on the story of industrialist J。P。 Morgan's Personal Librarian, Belle da Costa Greene。 A little known fact is that Belle is coloured and passing herself off as White at a time when this would be considered audacious at best and worthy of severe punishment。 Belle is successful beyond her wildest dreams and the book has a little of everything。 It kept me on the edge of my seat as I didn't want Belle to be "discovered。" A very interesting book。 。。。more

This was a very interesting historical fiction novel about the woman who served as J。 P。 Morgan's personal librarian for his huge collection。 What he didn't know is that she was a woman of color who appeared to be white。 I enjoyed it very much。 This was a very interesting historical fiction novel about the woman who served as J。 P。 Morgan's personal librarian for his huge collection。 What he didn't know is that she was a woman of color who appeared to be white。 I enjoyed it very much。 。。。more

Marie Benedict has made a career by fictionalizing the lives of women who made a tremendous difference in the world, but whose stories are not as well known as they should be。 This is a very readable imagining of the career and personal life of a woman the world knew as Belle da Costa Greene。 For many years, she managed and developed J。 P。 Morgan's personal library。 The authors do a great job of painting a picture of how Greene may have accomplished her work and of the way her relationship with Marie Benedict has made a career by fictionalizing the lives of women who made a tremendous difference in the world, but whose stories are not as well known as they should be。 This is a very readable imagining of the career and personal life of a woman the world knew as Belle da Costa Greene。 For many years, she managed and developed J。 P。 Morgan's personal library。 The authors do a great job of painting a picture of how Greene may have accomplished her work and of the way her relationship with Morgan may possibly have played out。 As mentioned above, the world knew her as Belle da Costa Greene, though her birth name was belle Marion Greener。 The name change was necessary because in order to gain admittance to the world she wished to inhabit, she felt that she needed to hide one aspect of her life: she was black。 Her skin was light enough that she could pass for white, something her mother encouraged her to do。 It is interesting to learn how she accomplished this and to imagine with the authors how this decision may have affected the rest of her life。 I have read many other books by Marie Benedict。 The women she profiles interest me, but the way in which she portrays them often offends me。 She makes the women out to be super human while most of the men come off very badly。 Fortunately, this is not the case with this book。 I wonder if the co-author, Victoria Christopher Murray, had something to do with that。 The back matter is well worth reading since it gives information to help readers separate fact from fiction。 The letters from the authors tell how their friendship deepened while writing this and I found them quite moving。 。。。more

Must readRead this to find out about the importance of the Morgan Library。 Read this to find out about an amazing person who is also an amazing librarian。 Read this to find out about two authors who worked together and then experienced the pandemic and Black Lives Matter because of George Floyd together。

I love that Marie Benedict knew she shouldn’t attempt to tell this story herself and her partnership with Victoria Christopher Murray resulted in a captivating story of this woman from history whose truth was not fully revealed during her lifetime。

The fighting spirit of human nature is one of the take aways from this book。The other is how we all have secrets and those secrets connect us as well as set the course for our lives。 We think we are in control by keeping quiet but in actuality we are allowing our lives, thoughts and actions to be manipulated by a source that is not who we truly are。 Silence has a price。

This book did an outstanding job of giving life to historical characters。 I loved every bit of this story。Outstanding choice for a bookclub, for high school groups, for solo reading。Highly recommended

I gave this book five stars, not because it’s the best piece of literature, but because it it about a remarkable woman in remarkable circumstances at a unique time in history。 Belle deCosta Greene is a real, amazing woman who was the person responsible for creating the great Pierpont Morgan library collection and making it available to the public。 She was hired by JP Morgan in the early 19 hundreds…a woman! She was secretly hiding the fact that she was born Belle Marion Greener, a black woman。 H I gave this book five stars, not because it’s the best piece of literature, but because it it about a remarkable woman in remarkable circumstances at a unique time in history。 Belle deCosta Greene is a real, amazing woman who was the person responsible for creating the great Pierpont Morgan library collection and making it available to the public。 She was hired by JP Morgan in the early 19 hundreds…a woman! She was secretly hiding the fact that she was born Belle Marion Greener, a black woman。 Her father was the first black graduate of Harvard。 She was very influenced by him but never able to talk about him。 He was one of the first fighters for equal rights after the civil war。 Her mother knew that they would only prosper if they assumed a white identity。 Belle lived an amazing transcontinental life in the art world as a white woman and burned all her personal papers before her death。 These authors, one black, one white, used tons of historical evidence to create what they believe could be her story。 I find it amazing how much the issues Belle faced are still alive a hundred years later。 I highly recommend this book。 。。。more

In the early 1900s, Belle da Costa Greene built and managed the private literary collection of J。P。 Morgan, including many incunabula Caxtons, Guttenbergs, etc。 She ingratiated herself into J。P。 Morgan's personal life and was a well-respected collector internationally。 But, in order to live this life, she also had to maintain and safely guard a lie。 In the early 1900s, Belle da Costa Greene built and managed the private literary collection of J。P。 Morgan, including many incunabula Caxtons, Guttenbergs, etc。 She ingratiated herself into J。P。 Morgan's personal life and was a well-respected collector internationally。 But, in order to live this life, she also had to maintain and safely guard a lie。 。。。more

Library audiobook: Belle is such an interesting person to feature in a historical novel! And I love how and why the authors collaborated to bring this story to life (see the authors’ notes)。 The book itself is probably a 3。5 star read for me (the language was stiff and the plot felt a little “all over the place”), but I’m rounding up for introducing me to a fascinating woman in history。

I enjoy reading engaging historical fiction that prompts me to learn more about the subjects in the book when the story is finished; and in this regard, I look forward to hopping on the next train to NYC to visit The Morgan Library。 Bankrolled by the J。P。 Morgan family empire, Belle da Costa Greene applied her aesthetic sensibilities, education, keen eye, and savvy business skills, to create an enduring cultural gift for generations。 Another reason I enjoyed this book is that it alludes to other I enjoy reading engaging historical fiction that prompts me to learn more about the subjects in the book when the story is finished; and in this regard, I look forward to hopping on the next train to NYC to visit The Morgan Library。 Bankrolled by the J。P。 Morgan family empire, Belle da Costa Greene applied her aesthetic sensibilities, education, keen eye, and savvy business skills, to create an enduring cultural gift for generations。 Another reason I enjoyed this book is that it alludes to other characters' identity masks, and in one case deception; but certainly no other figure harbored Belle's personal sacrifices and psychological strain while excelling internationally as a professional woman in a male-dominated profession within the context of the social movements and wars during the first half of the 20th century。 Belle deliberately destroyed most of her personal correspondence and writings prior to her death to protect her family and the legacy of her remarkable professional achievements。 Having limited primary source material, there were times when the conversations between characters, or Belle's inner thoughts seemed "filigreed", and I feared the book would head into drippy historical romance, but overall the writing is well-edited which is challenging when there are two authors。 。。。more

A collaborative project by two authors, this is a fascinating and timely story of a Gilded Age Black woman, passing as white, who shaped The Morgan Library into what it is today。 Belle Marion Greener/Belle de Costa Greene's story unfolds with chapters structured in a photograph like form。 Some chapters cluster together chronologically while others that follow one another skip a year or more。 I would have liked more years filled in。 It did take me a few chapters to really engage with the main cha A collaborative project by two authors, this is a fascinating and timely story of a Gilded Age Black woman, passing as white, who shaped The Morgan Library into what it is today。 Belle Marion Greener/Belle de Costa Greene's story unfolds with chapters structured in a photograph like form。 Some chapters cluster together chronologically while others that follow one another skip a year or more。 I would have liked more years filled in。 It did take me a few chapters to really engage with the main character but then I couldn't put it down。 The historical and author notes at the end are the best I have ever read。 。。。more

I don't know whether to give this book three or four stars。 It was an engaging story, pieced together from real events that took place at the beginning of the 20th century。 The narration, however, left a lot to be desired。 I almost gave up on it after the first few chapters because of the clipped style of the narrator, the way she drew out her "I"s in a rather self-important, almost defiant tone that sounded more self-righteous and did not match the story she was telling about her trepidations。 I don't know whether to give this book three or four stars。 It was an engaging story, pieced together from real events that took place at the beginning of the 20th century。 The narration, however, left a lot to be desired。 I almost gave up on it after the first few chapters because of the clipped style of the narrator, the way she drew out her "I"s in a rather self-important, almost defiant tone that sounded more self-righteous and did not match the story she was telling about her trepidations。 The second part of the book is the stronger one for me, and it was also where the tone started to change。 There was at times too much emphasis on social situations, dresses, society gossip, etc。 for my taste, and less detail about negotiations and acquisitions of art work, which would have been a lot more interesting to learn about in detail。 。。。more

This is one of the best historical novels I’ve ever had the pleasure to read。 Years ago, I visited The Pierpont Morgan Library in NYC but was not aware of the important role Belle da Costa Greene played in acquiring and preserving the remarkable collection of books and paintings housed there。 At the end of the novel, be sure to read the Historical and Authors’ Notes!

What a wonderful work of historical fiction。 What’s crazy about this story is that it’s a fictional work based on a real person - so well written。 I absolutely loved hearing about everything through Belle’s perspective of working with the famous J。P。 Morgan。 Highly recommend for those who enjoy reading historical fiction!

For those who likes the Vanishing Half, this is the real version。 While historical fiction the authors do a nice job creating the context and taking only a few liberties。 I enjoyed this book。 However, there is always something about her books that are a little lacking and rushed。 I want her to be Erik Larson, but she's not。 Still a good book。 Way better than the Clementine Book For those who likes the Vanishing Half, this is the real version。 While historical fiction the authors do a nice job creating the context and taking only a few liberties。 I enjoyed this book。 However, there is always something about her books that are a little lacking and rushed。 I want her to be Erik Larson, but she's not。 Still a good book。 Way better than the Clementine Book 。。。more
